I believe that this book can be helpful to companies that are trying to establish best practices and a whole new process, but has little benefit to an established company.

It continuously throughout the book banters on about how great the PDMv2 process it, but truly never lays out the process.

The book could have easily been summarized into a 50 page version of itself. It gives some good tools to use, but does not provide enough substance or business value from those tools. The book seems like a big "how to guide" for writing data migration strategies. This book was a disappointment to myself and my team that has read it.

I have reached out to the author to get his perspective on a few things that I have encountered and will hopefully hear back from him. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. This book is well written and was an enjoyable read. It focues on large-scale data migrations where there are multiple data stores and business stakeholders to deal with, and suggests what types of plans and documents to create and how to get people throughout the business invloved. My only critisim of the book is that it focuses too much on planning and does not really offer any pratical solutions or ideas in how to deal with what I thought would be quite common issues when technially having to do a data migration.

For example, it would have been great if the book could have discussed posiblities for dealing with where a column is not unique in the old database and needs to be unique in the new, where a column is nullable in the old and needs to be not null in the new, what to do with columns in the old database that are not used in the new which the bussiness insists must be kept because they have to keep data for 5 years, and so forth.

I apperciate that the first golden rule in the book is that "Data migration is a business not a technical issue", but as the person actually having to do the data migration, it would be helpful to have some possible solutions to the mentioned issues which I could discuss with the business. This is why "Planning Data Migration" is probablly a more accurate title for the book. Still a helpful read, and I would suggest anyone doing a large data migration purchase this book. I found myself vigorously nodding in agreement on virtually every page of this book, an indispensable distillation of years of experience and insight.

I purchased the original version many years ago and have used the methodology on data migration projects ever since. It's applicable to small or large projects. If you follow this approach you'll save yourself a lot of pain. The newest version has some important additions that make it worth purchasing the book. The book is like a marketing vehicle for the author to promote his consulting business.

Lots of text without any useful outcome. This book provides more of the information I need on data integration and related testing, than any other. I've been working with data integrations for years, this is the most practical and useful. Five stars! Excellent in giving me a gear end A great read. Excellent in giving me a gear end to end methodology to handle complex data migration projects.

Will be trying out the ideas in my next project. More examples will be better to flesh out the concepts. I do this work professionally, and this is giving me some great ideas around correcting present implementation issues etc. I may not use the methodology as a whole, but it helps fill gaps in my present process.
