It's a delightful account of the master detective in these exotic countries, where his amazing skills and intuition are as effective as they are in merry old England. Mookerjee, who is Holmes' Watson in these travels, is a marvelous narrative device to explain the strangeness of the lands and customs, and detail Holmes' deductions. Not a word! Two years later, popular demand made Conan Doyle resurrect the great detective. Holmes informs a stunned Dr. Jamyang Norbu - an avid reader of Kipling and Doyle - decides to take the matter in his hands; to investigate Holmes'stay in Lhasa, Tibet. What he unearths is the Mandala, written by a wily Bengali scholar, Hurrie Chunder Mookherjee, Holmes 'traveling companion. The Mandala holds the key to the mystery and revelas that it is difficult to resist.
An exciting, often richly humorous detective story The Mandala of Sherlock Holmes also evokes the romance of Kipling's India. Read more Read less. Save Extra with 2 offers. Sherlock Holmes In Japan. A Doll's House. Henrik Ibsen. Heads You Win. Somewhere mid-way, the story goes completely off the rails for me with its heavy mysticism. The clear deductions, which are a Holmes hallmark, are no where to be seen. And this put me off.
The story was ticking along fine until the introduction of the Dark One, at which point the entire story lost the essence of Sherlock Holmes. A really poor ending, to what had the potential to be a decent book. I really enjoyed this. Shelock as it turns out didn't die in Riechenbach Falls. I was never particularly iterested in Tibet, Nepal or the Himmalayas before, but this book took me there and I really enjoyed the trip.
It is an able tale in the continuation of Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. Oct 02, Shobha rated it it was amazing. Love the book. The colonial love of a Bengali babu towards the imperialists, portrayal of India during the Raj, the writing style, everything about this book charms me. I've read and re-read and re-read it a hundred times so far. Mar 19, Lesley rated it really liked it.
I'm not sure it entirely lives up to the promise of the idea: The denouement, perhaps, evokes Rider Haggard. But still, very enjoyable. This was one of the better patische's Ive read. If you like Sherlock Holmes, then its a must-read! Feb 25, Mila rated it really liked it Shelves: It's Holmes, it's a great pastiche and it's Holmes! Hurree goes off with Holmes on an adventure full of mystery, intrigue, Tibetan mysticism and more.
As they travel through forbidden Tibet, the country's beautiful lands and terrain is beautifully described. Some reviewers commented the Holmes protagonist was not "true" to his character. As I have not read any of the Holmes mysteries in years, I cannot say whether it is true or not..
Only I read this book as a separate entity. I enjoyed this novel because it showed me a country and people complete Hurree goes off with Holmes on an adventure full of mystery, intrigue, Tibetan mysticism and more.
I enjoyed this novel because it showed me a country and people completely foreign to me. Also, as the book was written in Holmes's timeline - late s, it was refreshing to find the non-Europeans described without prejudice and racism.
As their travels progressed, so did the descriptions of Tibetan history and beliefs. For me, it did get a bit overwhelming. I am including this novel towards my World Challenge. Jan 18, Steve Brooker rated it liked it. I enjoyed it on the whole.
It was in keeping with the essence of Holmes adventures, written by a "sidekick" as an historical account of a real person, with the inclusion of a great deal of historical and cultural interest from the East.
The latter part of the story departed from traditional Holmes somewhat and I can well understand why purists might throw the book down in disgust as it creeps, firstly towards Lara Croft, and then Dr Strange! Approach it with an open mind and an air of whimsy and yo I enjoyed it on the whole. Approach it with an open mind and an air of whimsy and you should enjoy yourself unless I have completely missed something greatly spiritual - alas for me.
El libro empieza realmente muy bien. Te hace sentir que lees algo en el mismo estilo de los diarios de Watson pero con un narrador de otra cultura. Much like the stories that the lost years of Jesus were spent in India, this novel is based on the idea that Sherlock Holmes spent the years after Reichenbach in India and Tibet.
Was it a fun mystery? Also yes. But when I actually think back to the Sherlock Holmes stories as opposed to the show or the movies, they also chugged along at a slow and steady pace, so I suppose this author has captured the essence of the originals in that way. An extra star just for that stunning and extremely moving end!
While the absence of female characters and the archaic although fitting for the period language take something away from this tale, it's still an ingenious way to interest people outside Tibet in the situation there. Free Tibet, period.
Dec 13, Megan Kelosiwang rated it liked it. This book had all the ingredients for me to love Sherlock, Kipling, Tibet, but it just didn't gel as an experience. The fantasy element to the climax felt a bit silly - I would have preferred a cleverer Holmes solution instead.
Loved the concept though. This was true to the character of Holmes only in the beginning. Rest of the book was just like any other adventure story. Jan 22, Hannah Andrews rated it really liked it. An interesting fusion of western love of logic and eastern cultural setting. Jan 08, Charles Prepolec rated it liked it. The basic premise was essentially to document the hows and whys of Holmes visit to Tibet during the great hiatus.
As a fan of the Flashman books as well as being interested in the British presence in India, I found the book to be a vital addition to my collection. By making the narrator someone other than Watson, the author did himself a great favour.

The biggest fau The basic premise was essentially to document the hows and whys of Holmes visit to Tibet during the great hiatus. The biggest fault with most pastiches is the inability of the author to effectively mimic the voice of Watson.
Thankfully Norbu doesn't try, and it has been far too long since I read Kim to take exception with the voice of Huree.
The story begins with Holmes arrival in India, as Sigerson of course. Huree is an agent of the Raj and is assigned to keep an eye on the unlikely foreigner.
I rather liked that one of Holmes' first lines to Huree was "You have been in Afghanistan I perceive. Much of the next few chapters are spent in creating a bond between these two unlikely fellows and all handled rather effectively I thought. The characterization of Holmes is fairly good, even if he is prone to quoting a bit too much Horace. He is also somewhat distant, and is clearly exploring, to some degree, the meaning of life.
Myself, I was expecting Holmes to become involved at Mycroft's request in the fascinating double-play of Kipling's Great Game, which surprisingly, he doesn't.
Holmes is of course on the run from the minions of the late Professor Moriarty, which begs the question as to why he would venture into Moran's home ground, and is besieged on all fronts. After an encounter with a giant red leech and a group of dacoits or more correctly Thugs, we move onto the trip to Tibet.
The intrigues and action are both excellent.
The Mandala of Sherlock Holmes: The Adventures of the Great Detective in India and Tibet
Norbu knows his plot pacing. The journey is not quite as evocative as I had hoped, as it goes rather quickly, which progresses the story admirably, but leaves me without the details of Indian life that I had hoped for. On arrival in Tibet, we find that Holmes has been expected and is requested to help defend the life of the youthful Dalai Lama to be.
He turns the request down flat, but of course ends up doing the right thing. It is on the night of the attack that brings Holmes round that the story suddenly veers into left field. It was at this point that what I thought was going to be one of the better pastiches that I had ever read turned suddenly sour.
While I expected a good deal of mysticism in this story, I certainly wasn't prepared for the revelations presented here. Pretty much the last thing I was expecting actually. The revelation of the identity of the "Dark One" who was behind the whole thing left me cold, particularly as I was half expecting Fu Manchu to make an appearance. Well, he didn't, but I won't spoil the finish for any of those curious enough to tackle this book, but I will say that a good deal of paranormal activity takes place and that the motivation for Holmes trip to Tibet is a huge let down.
Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed the first half of the book, but can't give it the recommendation that I had hoped for. The writing style is exemplary for a pastiche, as is the representation of Holmes, but If you enjoy the X- Files and don't mind mixing Holmes with the paranormal, then you really will love this, but for me, it missed the mark.
